OK well have read a number of ways to get started and I finally got around to it.
So far am only a lvl 22 Blacksmith, but this didnt cost me much other than my purchase of a Geerlok smithing tool at 100pp (not necessary item, but adds 5% to skill increase/fewer combine failures, so is worth it at higher levels where combine failure is expensive).
I got myself the smithy hammer, velium smithy hammer, sharpening stone, all available from the merchant Nimren Stonecutter @ 45, -110, Inside Rogues' Guild building in Thurgadin.
I have found it easier to stay in Thurgadin to do my smithing as I cant carry much in weight and walk at same time, and Thurgadins Forge is only a short distance from the Thurgadin Exchange which has both bankers and General suppliers (WATER FLASKS!!)
I started with combining 2 x small bricks of ore with 1 water flask to make Metal Bits, and this got me to a skill of 18.
I then combined 1 x Metal Bits, 1 Water Flask and 1 x File Mold to get a File. This took me to a skill of 22 (not a great leap but files are needed for higher up combines)
You can start making money even at this level by taking a velium weapon ie morning star and using the velim smithy hammer and combining it with the weapon in the forge, you get back 1 x small brick of velium, 2 x peice of velium and the velium smithy hammer back.

Also the Bazaar would make a good place to do smithing as the weight allowance is much higher, so you can carry more from the bankers to the forge each time.

With Geerlok it is better to have a wis/int item in that slot (or str if you are that kinda blacksmith) than the geerlok. This increases your chance for success by even more...
The time to use geerlok is when your int/wis/str is maxed out without the use of that space.

Breaking down velium weapons and bricks down to small pieces got me up to a skill of 30 from 20. Unfortunately even when breaking down bricks is trivial it can still fail. Which is a right pain when you fail to break down 2 huge blocks like I did this morning and end up with nothing! Arrg!
Still, rumour has it (Shirc?) that there is someone you can hand bricks into and get back the broken down pieces. Anyone know anything about this chap?
What would be really handy would be a portable forge.

There's also a quest to get your smithing skill up to 54 without spending any cash. You help out an NPC smith with the boring bits. www.rpgexpert.com/2486.html

Crystal Caverns has it'svery own forge. So farming velium weapons (Very Common Drops) and taking them to the small Dwarven town at the bottom of the zone is even easy for a weight watching monk. At first the dwarves may not want to deal with you depending in faction, but thats easily fixed as the orc's you kill for all your velium needs are on opposing faction.

Ok here we go... Posting a guide on every forum
Smithing:
Overall Experience: Smithing can be a very hard skill for you, if you are not rich. Some combines can run you all the way up to 500pp a combine JUST for skillups. This is not for the feint hearted.
Step 1: Head out to Abysmal Sea and find to correct person for your skill-up training (ex the smithing man is a smithing merchent, hail him for combine quests) You will hit level 54 with this
Step 2: Create dairy s*p*o*o*n* (2 metal bits, s*p*o*o*n* mold, flask of water) PS. sry for the * something keeps spelling it sthingys when I dont use it lol. You will hit 74 with this
Step 3: Create banded gorgets (1 sheet metal [2 small bricks of ore, flask of water] , gorget mold, flask of water) You will hit 92 from this
Step 4: Embroidering needles (needle mold, 1 metal bits, celestial essence, flask of water) Until 122
YOU HAVE NOW COMPLETED THE EASY PARTS/CHEAP PARTS OF SMITHING
Step 5: The way i did this step was by bypassing ornate/fine plate due to the fact of the immense pices to make the combine. Create Acrylia Chain Coifs (Combine Smithy Hammer [bought in katta], 2x Acrylia Rings[file, large brick of acrylia, water flask], Combine Acrylia Temper, Coif Pattern. Welcome to 206
Step 6: Enchanted Velium Bits (WARNING these will not sell for ANY money![2x small brick of velium ore, coldain velium temper, spel: enchant velium {actual spell scroll} ) To create these, buy as many huge/large bricks of velium you can get, or farm in Velketor's. Take the velium and use a chisel t make each brick into several small bricks. You can then buy the temper and spell you need from a smithy merchent in thurgadin. Welcome to 222!
As said before, I have atleast 220 in all TSs, so gimmie a holla if you need help
