Read the entire instructions before starting so you know what you are in for, and if you see items for sale along the way you know what to buy and horde!!!
Ok this is up to the individual, but for myself it is easier to find the ingredients to skill up on practice runes than it is to find the necessary words.
Wizards need the Lexicon (low level) or Sorcerers Lexicon (used when you get above skill 135 in research)
Enchanters use Tome of Endless Enchantments (low level) or Phantasmal Tome (135+)
Necromancers Book of Dark Bindings (low level) or Warlocks Book of Binding (135+)
Magicians use Elemental Grimoire (low level) or Arch Magus Grimoire (135+)
These are for the word actual spell combines. Now go to your home town and to your guild hall, your class spell sellers there will sell you a quill (this is returned on practice runes so you only need one until you start lvl 50 spells) and you will need parchment, which comes in stacks of twenty. You will need around 60 parchments for the first two levels of runes and then up to 100 for the next levels.
I suggest at this stage you have a spare character, only need to be lvl 1 and in POK, take them to the building with the Necromancer Guild Master and see a merchant called Maryalis N'Ryt. Buy as many deluxe toolboxes as you can carry and go put them in bank slots, do this until the alt toon has all bank slots and personal slots full of deluxe toolboxes, this should cost under 50pp. Deluxe toolboxes are 10 slot and when you no longer need them are resellable, unlike traders satchels.
Now park the alt at a bank, as you will need it to hold all the peices as each level has at least one component that doesnt stack and you may need between 30 - 100 of them (level dependant)
When you have done all this and have all these pieces come back here for the next lesson

You now need to do one of two quests to obtain the Concordance of Research, this is the book used to make the practice runes azia and beza which you then combine in your class spell book/tome. You may chose which quest location suits your class better.
First quest. Where: North Karana Who: Mrysila Rating: Good (4.77) Time: 1 hour Level: 10 Appropriate Classes: Enchanter Magician Necromancer Wizard Quest Items: Greater Lightstone Lightstone Era: Original Type: Quest
Mrysila may be found at the gypsy camp at -675, -160.
You say, 'Hail, Mrysila'
Mrysila says 'I am Mrysila, custodian of the [Concordance of Research].'
You say, 'What Concordance of Research?'
Mrysila says 'The 'Concordance of Research' is an aid to those who follow the path of academia. It, and its sister books, 'Runes and Research,' volumes I and II, help those who are [interested] in researching spells.'
You say, 'I am interested.'
Mrysila says 'I have several copies of each book. If you want a copy of 'Runes and Research', volume I or II, bring me a lightstone and I will give you whichever book I have more of at the moment. Bring me a greater lightstone, and I will give you a copy of the 'Concordance of Research."
On handing in a Lightstone:
Mrysila says 'A lightstone? Thank you very much. Here is a copy of 'Runes and Research.''
You gain experience!!
On handing in a Greater Lightstone:
Mrysila says 'A greater lightstone? Thank you very much. Here is a 'Concordance of Research' for you.'
You gain experience!!
Second Quest. Where: Southern Desert of Ro Who: Smith Tv`Ysa Rating: Good (4.34) Time: 1/2 hour Level: 10 Appropriate Classes: All Factions Raised: Dark Bargainers Dreadguard Inner Dreadguard Outer Quest Items: Greater Lightstone Lightstone Era: Original Type: Quest
Smith Tv`Ysa may be found at +100, +500.
If you are an evil magic using class (or at least not KOS to dark elves), go to South Ro and talk to the female Dark Elf who sells the smithing stuff.
Walk up and 'Hail' her. She wants regular lightstones for the books that give combine instructions and a greater lightstone for the book that actually combines the ingredients.
The book you get for the lightstone is random and seems to be book one far more often than book two, so bring plenty of lightstones. You get some good xp for doing this and it increases faction with DarkBargainers, DreadGuardInner and DreadGuardOuter.
More importantly, the book you get for the greater lightstone sells for about 8 pp, making it far more valuable than the lightstone itself.
(You don't need to be a caster to do this). Killing wisps and using this quest is a great way to get money and experience and faction for those in their low teens.

You are now ready to begin collecting the materials needed to make the runes.
I will list each set of runes separately and add which merchants sell these in unlimited stock or which merchants are the best to check for the other items.
When Complete Runes are made, they sell to merchants for around 4pp each, so you do get a small amount of pp back from each level. Merchants of your own class and race will give the best pp back, but most average 4pp.

Practice Runes.
Azia - Lapis Lazuli, Bat Wing, Bone Chips combine with 1 parchment and 1 quill. You recieve back one practice azia stone and 1 quill.
All gems can be found on gem merchants in POK (use find button to locate them) and can also be found on some of the merchants in the bazaar.
Batwings can be bought in unlimited quantity in the bazaar at a merchant named Dashelo Dalroshan.
Bone chips for EVIL classes are easiest gained in Nektulos forest or in field of bones.
For GOOD classes, anywhere with skeletons will do, East Freeport, Greater Faydark, Qeynos and Qeynos Hills are just a few.
You can also purchase them off traders in the bazaar for 5gold - 2pp dependind on trader.
You will need aproximately 30 of these to get enough azia runes to combine into complete runes to get to the trivial of 21.
Practice Beza - Turquoise, Fire Beetle Eye, Any rusty slashing weapon + 1 parchment and 1 quill. You recieve back one practice beza stone and 1 quill.
Rusty Slashing weapons will drop off skeletons, orcs and other low level mobs and are easy to hunt, they also turn up occasionally when fishing, so checking the fishing merchants in POK or merchants in the newbie zones is also a good idea.
Fire Beetle Eyes drop off Fire Beetles in most newbie zones and Pyre Beetles in Nektulos. Again check the merchants in these zones as they may have a few sold to them. (There is also a vendor in Misty Thicket in one of the huts near the Rivervale entrance that sells these. This hasnt been confirmed though.)
Now take your Spell book/tome and put one practice azia and one practice beza into it, you do not need quill or parchment for this part, combine the two to get one Complete Practice Rune. Do this until you trivial at a skill of 21.

Apprentice Runes.
Trivial at 41. You will need approximately 30 Complete Apprentice Runes to get this trivial. I made 50 to be safe and had a small handful left over after trivialling.
Apprentice Azia - Hematite, Bixie Wing, Froglok Eye + 1 parchment and 1 quill.
Bixie Wings are found on Bixies in Kithicor Forest and Misty Thicket. For evil classes you will find it safest to invis yourself and run to the Tower Wall in the middle of the zone. Stay well clear of the guards there as they are KOS and overzealous. There are a number of towers, one in particular has a number of Bixie's spawn and ALL of them drop at least one wing. Nuking them or using Drain Spirit for a necro is the best idea as they run and you dont want to be chasing them past the guards. Camp a tower and they spawn fairly quickly with just enough break to med a little inbetween.
Froglok eyes are a little harder, you may need a higher level guild member or friend to help with this one. They can be found in Upper Guk on a froglok gaz knight, a froglok gaz warrior, a froglok ton warrior, a froglok tuk knight, a froglok tuk warrior and also some froglok shamans. These are between level 15 - 20 mobs. They run as soon as cast on, so use root or snare and then sick with pet and/or melee.
Apprentice Beza - Cats Eye Agate, Large Snake Rattle, Any Rusting Piercing or Bludgeoning (1hblunt) Weapon + 1 parchment and 1 Quill.
Cats Eye Agate is found at Gem merchants and also in the Bazaar at Dashelo Dalroshan.
Large Snake Rattles drop of most snakes, East Commonlands in the sand near tunnel to Deserts of Ro, North and South Ro and also Oasis of Marr are fantastic places to hunt them. Make sure you get Large not Giant.
Again the rusty weapons can be found on most skeletons, orcs and merchants in newbie zones. Also drop off zombies and if you hunt these, save the zombie skins as you need them for later.
Now using Spell Book, combine 1 Apprentice Azia and 1 Apprentice Beza to get One Complete Apprentice Rune. Do this until Trivial.

Training Runes.
Training Azia - Bloodstone, Wasp Wing, Zombie Skin + 1 Parchment and 1 quill. You recieve back one Training azia stone and 1 quill.
Bloodstones from Gem merchants as well as Dashelo Dalroshan in the bazaar.
Wasp Wing - found in Greater Faydark and Misty Thicket. If you have a GOOD class you can check the merchants in Kelethin or get a Guild Member or friend who is of GOOD class to do so.
Zombie Skin - Zombies, Rotting Citizens, froglok ghouls can be found in East Commonland, Innothule Swamp, Nektulos, North and South Ro and Oasis of Marr as well as other newbie areas, also check the merchants there.
Training Beza - Onyx, Spiderling Silk, Raw Hide Armor (can be any size but only cap, mask, gorget, tunic, shoulderpads or cloak)
Spiderling Silk drops off any spiderlings and all newbie areas have plenty of these, they also sell for 5pp each in the bazaar on traders.
Raw Hide drops off a lot of mobs, I have found the most frequent drops off the orcs, madmen and zombies in North and South Ro.
Take you spell book/tome and combine 1 Training azia and 1 Training Beza to get 1 Complete Training Rune. Continue this until trivial at 62.

Journeyman Runes.
Journeyman Azia - Jasper, pixie wing, bat fur + 1 parchment and 1 quill.
Pixie Wings often show up on merchants in Kelethin, and can be hunted off pixies in Greater and Lesser Faydark.
Bat Fur - most bats drop this so newbie areas are good, also surrounding merchants can be checked. Unlimited supplies can be bought from East Commonlands merchant Katha Firespinner at loc 232, 4733. Its the inn right before the West Commonlands zone in.
Journeyman Beza - Star Rose Quartz, Burned Out Lightstone, Raw Hids Armor (any size but only Belt, Sleeves, Wristbands, Gloves, Leggings or Boots), + 1 parchment and 1 quill.
Burned Out Lightstones are No Drop and Temporary Items, so make sure you have all the other ingredients first and then go hunt the B.O.Lightstones. Best place I have found is Nektulos Forest where they spawn in large numbers and as a caster, my pet can kill them with melee or I will hit them with drain spirit as well as sick pet on them. They do run, so sicking pet and nuking will stop them fast. You will also get Lightstones and Greater Lightstones and these sell well, so you will earn a little pp while hunting them.
Raw Hide drops off a lot of mobs, I have found the most frequent drops off the orcs, madmen and zombies in North and South Ro. You probably already have some of these pieces from hunting the raw hide and zombie skins earlier on.
Again take you spell book/tome and combine 1 Journeyman Azia and 1 Journeyman Beza to get 1 Complete Journeyman Rune. Continue until trivial at 95.

Magi Runes.
You will need approx 100 - 150 of each for this set. Trivial is 182.
Magi Azia - Topaz, Shark Skin, Brownie Parts + 1 parchment and 1 Quill.
Shark skin is obviously an underwater hunt, so you will need an enduring breath item, such as a fishbone earring (quest item worth getting) or the enduring breath spell.
I found the best place to hunt these was just off the pier in Ocean of Tears with 1 - 4 skins dropping off each shark. If you are of evil faction you will need to find a port there, or use the underground tunnels to get to the freeport docks and sneak or invis to the translocator with " /say I wish to Travel to Ocean of Tears" already typed as there is one kos mob standing next to him and the guards often hang out there.
Also the druids on the islands in Oceans of Tears are NOT friendly with evil classes/races, so stay in the water and not tooo close to the pier.
On the bright side they are stackable!!!
Brownie parts can be bought in the bazaar on occasion, although dont pay more than 15pp each. You can hunt these, but at lvl 40 the guards still con red to me and are KOS and also clerics so heal each other.
Take a higher guild member or friend to knock the guards off, the brownies inside are green to me at lvl 40. kill all the camp excepting the merchants, as they dont drop anything and wont attack you (unless you attack them). You get runs where you will get 7 brownie parts per camp or 1, they are not predictable and the respawn time is around 15 mins. They are also stackable.
Med up, go kill the faries nearby, but watch out for the unicorns who are KOS and above lvl 65. Be prepared to need around 100- 150 brownie parts, so camping this will take you probably 60 hours, but this is worth it as you go from skill of 95 to 182 and is the last practice rune to make.
Magi Beza - Topaz, Hill Giant Toes, ANY fine steel piercing or bludgeoning (1hblunt) weapon + 1 parchment and 1 quill.
Hill Giant Toes - websites says fire or frost as well, but i could not get frost giant toes to combine, so stick with Hill giant.
You can hunt hill giants, especially in Rathe Mountains on the plateau (find merchant Susanna on the map) and get a reasonable amount of pp as well as toes, or you can check merchant Susanna who normally has several hundred for sale between 8 - 11 pp each.
THESE DO NOT STACK AND YOU WILL NEED 100 - 150, so take your deluxe toolboxes in every personal slot and be prepared to invis and waddle home or gate (I bind myself in small bank in POK as my DEF Necro cant carry much before being unable to move).
The other merchants in Rathe sell these for 27pp each, so dont bother with them. I also find them on regular occasions on the merchants near the main bank in POK and in the bazaar, a handful here and there, and again 8 - 11 pp depending on Charisma and factions.
Fine Steel Piercing and Fine Steel 1h Blunt weapons.
The most reliable drop for these are the guards in Neriak Foreign Quarters and Commons. As I am DEF I couldnt hunt these without losing my home faction, so had boyfriends iksar monk do this for me.
He is lvl 62 and most of these were green to him, but there were occasional light blues and some are clerics and can do full heals from as low as 1% health. Get some help with these, and again they DO NOT STACK.
OK for the last time take your spell book/tome out and combine 1 Magi Azia and 1 Magi Beza to get 1 Complete Magi Rune. Do this until trivial.
This takes you from a skill of 95 through to 182. After this you will need to combine the lvl 50+ spells using the spell/tome and can now sell your concordance of research book.

Just as a note, you can make spells along the way through the practice runes, as long as you have all the necessary words and enough skill to not fail all the combines.
Trivials for spell combines are :
Level 16 spells - trivial at 26 Level 20 spells - trivial at 46 Level 24 spells - trivial at 71 Level 29 spells - trivial at 96 Level 34 spells - trivial at 120 Level 39 spells - trivial at 140 Level 44 spells - trivial at 166 Level 49 spells - trivial at 184
These trivials are for the wizard spells, but Necromancer, Enchanter and Magicians are similar. I could not find exact trivials for Necromancer, Enchanter or Magician spells, but my Necro spells ran almost exactly as the above trivials.

High Level Research.
The quest to get the book/tome for 50+ spells is as follows.
Where: Gulf of Gunthak Who: Researcher Alvarik Rating: Good (4.66) Time: Instant Level: 36 Appropriate Classes: Enchanter Magician Necromancer Wizard Researcher Alvarik is located at +1375, +75. If you are an INT-based caster class with a research skill over 100:
You say, 'Hail, Researcher Alvarik'
Researcher Alvarik says 'Hello there. Are you too a student of the arcane?'
You say, 'Yes, I am a student of the arcane.'
Researcher Alvarik says 'Excellent. I hold myself as a master of researching the arcane. Even though I study mostly in the art of wizardry, I still carry tomes of the other realms. If you are a master of research and would like to borrow a copy of the research tome, let me know what school of magic you belong to and I may be able to help you out. I also carry with me hand copied works of the masters. If you like you can buy one from me for a small fee.'
He carries necromancer and wizard books, which outline the recipes for high-level spells. His assistant, Assistant Vagli, has the books for enchanters and magicians. Each class has around 8 books, and each book costs around 2 pp.
You say, 'I am an enchanter.' (or necro, mage, wizz)
Researcher Alvarik says 'So you fancy yourself an enchanter? I dabble a bit in it myself, though I am more interested in the art of explosions! Nevertheless, here is the Phantasmist's Tome. Good luck to you in your studies!'
You receive a Phantasmal Tome.
If you claim to be something you are not:
Researcher Alvarik says 'Do you take me for a fool? It is obvious that you are not what you state. Begone from my sight, your false statements disgust me and insult the realms of the arcane.'
